CANopen was originally developed as a standardised embedded network with highly flexibile configuration capabilities. It was pre-developed in an Esprit project under the chairmanship of Bosch. In 1995, the CANopen specification was handed over to CAN in Automation’s (CiA) international users and manufacturers group.

Originally, the CANopen communication profile was based on the CAN application layer (CAL) protocol. CiA members have reviewed the specification and have enhanced the functionality. Since version 4.01, the CiA DS 301 Application Layer and Communication Profile, known as CANopen specification, also includes the application layer specification. The version of CANopen has been accepted by the European standardization authorities as EN 50325-4.

The CANopen option for the X-Analyser means the user can view raw CAN data, engineering signals and the CANopen interpretation, all within X-Analyser’s intuitive graphical user interface.

The X-Analyser for CANopen features include: -

Receive / Monitoring Features

  • Observe CANopen messages (up to 1’000’000 messages buffered in RAM to ensure best performance).
  • Observe and filter messages by node ID and messages types (SDO, PDO, NMT, Emergency, Sychronisation, etc…)
  • CAN Error Frame

Controller Simulation / Transmit Features

  • CANopen Oriented message builder
  • Tranmsission triggering – Key, Cyclic (1ms), Upon Recieved CAN ID
  • Error Frame Injection – Key Triggered
  • CANopen bus record playback feature
  • Text file based transmiter files – User definable

Engineering Signal Interpretation

  • View CANopen data as temperature, motor torque, etc… (Text and Graphical)

The CANopen awareness feature will also allow the user to configure the following viewing options: -

  • NODE ID – AH or Specific Node ID
  • Master PDO – Master Processed Data Object
  • Slave PDO – Slave Processed Data Object
  • SDO – Service Data Object
  • Bootup Message
  • NMT Module Control – Network Management Module Control
  • NMT Error Control – Network Management Error Control
  • Emergency Message
  • Synchronisation Message
  • Time-Stamp Message
  • CANopen Message Builder

The CANopen message builder is an extremely useful tool for use during the commissioning of CANopen networks, or the testing of CANopen-compatable equipment. It allows the user to emulate CANopen messages.
